My 101

From Day Zero:

The Mission:

Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:

Tasks must be specific (i.e., no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (i.e., represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Jamie vs Dan: Scattergories

Since we don't really leave the house anymore because of the baby, we've put together a Mega Game Challenge.  Included in the challenge will be video games, board games, card games, computer games, and any other kind of games we can think of.

Most of the games will be best of 3 or first to 10 wins or something like that.

We started it off with...

We played the initial 12 cards that come with the game as well as 12 booster cards.

I won 12 rounds. Jamie won 6 rounds. We tied 6 rounds.

Final Score
Dan: 187 (avg 7.8)
Jamie: 161 (avg 6.7)

NOTE: If you have an alliterative answer (e.g., Peter Pan), Jamie still only counts it as 1 point...can you believe that?!

Dan: 1
Jamie: 0

After 3 1/2 years, we've finally moved out of Coby Point. We are in a much bigger place that actually has a driveway, a garage, and a bedroom for Elijah!

Book #24: How to Build a Time Machine

"How to Build a Time Machine"
By: Paul Davies

I've always liked reading books about time travel, whether it's science fiction or nonfiction. This one didn't really do it for me. As one Amazon reviwer put it, it should be called "How to Build a Quick Tour of Physical Theories."

Rather than read about tachyons, muons, quark-gluon plasma, I want to read about killing my mother and other paradoxes like this:

A professor builds a time machine in the year 2009 and decides to go forward to 2019. When he arrives, he seeks out the university library and browses through the current journals. In the mathematics section, he notices a splendid new theorem and jots down the details. Then he returns to 2009, summons a clever student, and outlines the theorem. The student goes away, tidies up the argument, writes a paper, and publishes it in a mathematics journal. It was, of course, in this very journal that the professor read the paper in 2019. Where did the theorem come from?

If you like stuff like that, I suggest "Time Travel in Einstein's Universe."

Book #23: The Dark Knight Returns

"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns"
By: Frank Miller

I really liked this, even though it was a little dated with Reagan and the whole arms race with Russia thing going on.
And I always liked Superman, but is gets kind of old when he's involved since there aren't a whole lot of ways to fight him.

#7: brush teeth 3x a day for a month

I can always be counted on for at least two brushes per day, but I was never able to get  the full three you're always told you should. I started this goal a couple of times but would inevitably forget one afternoon, and then the whole month would be down the drain. Well, thanks to the alarm feature on my new phone, I brushed my teeth three times per day for the last 30 days. Yay, for no midday stinkmouth!

Book #21: Gone Tomorrow

Gone Tomorrow
By Lee Child

Waaaayyy better than last year's book. For the first 75% of the book, Reacher acted more like Jessica Fletcher than the tough ex-MP from the other books, but he more than made up for it in the end. If you haven't read Jack Reacher books, you should start now.

"Love, Ellen: A Mother/Daughter Journey"

A pretty good book, though the last hundred or so pages kind of dragged on. I've been reading it off and on for several months and finally finished it. It could have used more Ellen.

Book #19: What It Feels Like

cover (170×259)

"Esquire Presents: What It Feels Like"
Edited by: AJ Jacobs

This was a mostly entertaining, quick read. It's a compliation of first-hand stories about all kinds of stuff, from what it feels like to walk on the moon to what it feels like to have ebola. Some of the stories were boring and didn't give you much insight, but at most the stories are three pages long, so it's not a big deal.

Book #18: Haunted

Haunted
By: Chuck Palahniuk

My review, pieced together from several Amazon reviews:

"The problem with the book as a whole...is that it simply doesn't go anywhere. It comes up with a few interesting metaphors, and displays a couple interesting themes, but there's just not anything very deep or thought-provoking here."

"...there doesn't seem to be a method behind the madness. It's an entertaining read, but it will leave you with many unanswered questions."

"...the damaging problem is that the savagery and dismemberment didn't ultimately amount to much. I couldn't discern a point or a purpose, a reason for collecting these miniature horrors. It just felt lurid for the sake of being vile. For some, that might be a recommendation, sort of a 'can't take your eyes off of it' fascination. I was reading hoping for something to emerge from the chaos and gore. It just never gelled."

"Overall, this book is pretty weak."

#9: lose 2 inches off waist

This is probably thanks in part to Jamie's diabetic diet, since we're not just eating pizza and ice cream anymore. It's probably also thanks in part to measuring in the early morning. Either way, I have no problem checking another goal off the list.

Now, where are those ice cream sandwiches...
